Just and effective governance is needed for successful wind energy development.

JustWind4All is a research project that supports the acceleration of on- and offshore wind energy, including emerging wind technologies like airborne and floating, through just and effective governance.

By integrating insights from different academic disciplines and societal perspectives, we support synergies and exchange among people and organisations to coordinate and participate in actions around wind energy deployment.

AWE officially part of the German Renewable Energy Act

In a groundbreaking leap towards a greener future, the European airborne wind energy sector celebrates the inclusion of Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) in the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). This move, spearheaded by Airborne Wind Europe, marks a historic milestone, as airborne wind energy secures its place in the sky. Photo by Airborne Wind Europe Germany aims for climate neutrality by 2045 calls for almost doubling renewable energy capacities by 2030. To achieve this, the rate of expansion must triple.  Airborne wind energy systems (AWES), a developing technology, that is in the focus of our Wind Lab 3, can make an important contribution to this as an innovative renewable energy technology. These systems generate electricity by using automated flying devices or kites which are attached by a tether or cable to a ground station. They tap into the strong [...]

Promoting wind energy development: challenges, strategies and innovations in the EU

A collection of shared expertise from three Horizon Europe projects – WENDY, JustWind4All and WIMBY The Directives on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (Directive 2009/28/CE, Directive (EU) 2018/2001, Directive (EU) 2023/2413) are a key element in the development of renewable energies in the European Union. They serve as a fundamental framework to guide Member States in the implementation of renewable energy policies and practices. These directives lay the foundation for promoting the use of renewable energies by guiding Member States in implementing renewable energy policies and practices in their respective territories. They also highlight the importance of public participation and social acceptance in the sector. However, despite the progress made, challenges remain, particularly concerning around public participation. Efforts are still needed to ensure effective and meaningful participation of local communities and stakeholders at all stages of the process. Barriers faced by [...]

Webinar: Circular Wind – Securing the energy transition through circularity

Join RGI's upcoming Best Practice Webinar with Renewable Parts on 19 June to learn more about challenges and solutions for a more circular supply chain within the wind industry. Achieving the Paris Agreement's goals of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C and reaching net zero emissions by 2050 requires a major overhaul of our energy systems. In the EU, this means integrating at least 42.5% renewable energy into total consumption by 2030. This necessitates an annual addition of over 30GW of wind energy capacity. Wind energy is projected to supply over half of electricity by 2050. However, this expansion faces obstacles like supply chain disruptions, increased costs, and competition from non-EU markets. Rising costs have already led to the cancellation of significant projects, like Vattenfall's 1.4-GW Norfolk Boreas offshore wind project in the UK. A sustainable solution involves shifting to a [...]
